How to Choose an Industrial PC (IPC)

Choosing an IPC by processing power, fanless/fanned, storage, environmental ruggedness and expansion (I/O, fieldbus).

3 min readUpdated: 2026-07-07

An industrial PC running SCADA, machine vision or soft-PLC is designed — unlike an office PC — to withstand wide temperature, vibration and 24/7 operation.

  • Cooling — fanless (passive) preferred in dusty environments
  • Storage — industrial SSD, vibration-resistant
  • Expansion — fieldbus card, extra I/O, isolated serial ports
In 24/7 IPCs, disk and power-supply ageing are the most common failure causes; redundant storage is recommended for critical systems.
