Electrolytic capacitors buffer energy on the drive DC link and age with heat + time (electrolyte dry-out). This is one of the most common failure causes in power electronics.
Ageing symptoms
- Bulging or opened vent on the top
- Capacitance drop, ESR (internal resistance) rise
- DC-link ripple → undervoltage / overvoltage faults
Capacitors are measured with an ESR meter; dried-out ones are replaced in bulk (recap) during board repair.
